edwardp
I have an Epson Stylus Color 400 printer connected to Desktop 1 (see sig). When Mandriva 2008 was installed, it installed the Gutenprint drivers for this printer. I would like to use the "stcolor" drivers as the colors are more vibrant and it also results in overall faster printing. I have no idea whether stcolor was also installed, but when I went into the MCC Printer selection, I did not see anything that would allow me to change the printer driver. Would appreciate any assistance. Thanks. Ed
Greg2
I don't have your model printer, but I do use Epson printers. I think you will find that the gutenprint drivers work better than the stcolor. However if you want to try the stcolor, you will find the PPD file and instructions here: openprinting.org
edwardp
I downloaded the PPD file from that site, however I could not find any instructions on how to install it, nor how to use the Mandriva Control Center to actually select it, once installed. Printing seems to be at a lower priority than web browsing, so while I am printing something and using the web browser at the same time, the printing gets somewhat sluggish, it may print a line or two, stop for a few seconds, print the next few lines, stop and this pattern repeats itself. This results in taking some 5 minutes just to print one page.
Greg2
You need to place the Epson-Stylus_Color_400-stcolor.ppd in your /usr/share/cups/model directory. Then with your browser, open http://localhost:631/ and set it up with the 'Add new printer' interface.
edwardp
And if necessary, am I correct that I can switch back to gutenprint by simply using the Add New Printer selection?
Greg2
You should first remove the printer, then add new printer, using gutenprint drivers. However if I was going to switch back to gutenprint drivers, I would use the mcc.
edwardp
The file has been copied into the directory. Cups launched, added printer, selected LPT #1 for Device. Unless LPT #1 is incorrect, CUPS has done nothing for the past 5 minutes...
Greg2
Did you remove the printer first, so it's not trying to use different drivers? MCC > Hardware > Set up printers > Delete. Then use the CUPS interface to set up a new printer.
