mdg
I recompiled my kernel according to dolson's tutorial lhttp://icculus.org/~dolson/mdkxp/?c=ttrls/mdkkernel but ran into problems installing the 4191 nvidia drivers. Ater installing and editing the XF86Config-4 file. I get this error: modprobe: can't locate module nvidia Failed to install nvidia.o I looked at tyme's post with the same error http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...hlight=nvidia+o but I couldn't understand how it was fixed. Can someone explain?
bvc
From http://icculus.org/~dolson/mdkxp/?c=ttrls/mdkkernel Please note, if you are an NVidia user, you will have to recompile your drivers to use with this new kernel. This means you'll need the NVIDIA_kernel.src.rpm and rebuild it for the new kernel. The NVIDIA_GLX can be just the i386 but I'd rebuild it as well from the NVIDIA_GLX.src.rpm. mdg
Well, I did rpm --rebuild on both the -kernel and -GLX files. The rpms went to usr/src/....i586. I tried to install them, but got a message saying newer drivers are already installed (tex-4191) I don't really know what I'm doing. Do I need to uninstall the drivers I'm using for my default kernel?
Guest anon
I don't really know what I'm doing. Do I need to uninstall the drivers I'm using for my default kernel? In a word, yes :D Don't forget to edit your XF86Config-4 file after installing the new driver ie: driver=nv should read "nvidia" then rstart X, by pressing "CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE"
bvc
You also need to exit GUI/X and go to init 3/console. Sometimes the driver can't be removed and the new added if in X. Don't use!!!!..... rpm --rebuild The exact prob you're having has occured using the rpm command. It's a non-updated way...the proper new way is rpmbuild --rebuild which from the rpm-build pkg. BTW, any reason you're not using the new? http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=4567

mdg
I downloaded the latest nvidia drivers and installed on my default kernel and recompiled kernel. Love the way it compiles automatically to fit the new kernel! Took care of whatever problem it was that I had. I still don't know how to fix the problem, but who cares, my system runs
