X crashes my laptop

Hi, i have a HP Omnibook XE3 laptop with an Intel i830 graphics card.

Well everything is ok, except that when i logout of X, the machine crashes completely. All i get is a black screen, not even returning to the terminal prompt. I have to turn off and on the machine again to reset Mandrake.

If i compile a vanilla 2.4.20 kernel, the problem disappears, but then again i *really* need some patches from the original Mandrake's kernel, like MPPE for instance.

I have a DELL with an Intel i845 that doesn't sufffer from this problem.

I'm considering buying the complete Mandrake 9.1 package, but not until i solve this issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your attention.

Welcome!

Have you looked through the logs?

/var/log/messages and others

and

~/.xsession-errors in your HOME dir.

I ask because the cause needs to be determined. If the video chip is the cause and causes this prob on both laptops and desktops then it's in the rt section. If it's a laptop issue then it needs to be moved to Laptops.

See if you can find anything in the logs and with google so we can try and resolve the prob.

regards,

bvc

I also did "tail -f /var/log/XFree86.0.log > /root/X_custom.log and reproduced the error.

The result is as follows:

Hi gamito,

U should look into /var/log/XFree86.0.log (the default X log file) (which u have already done). After the freeze, can u connect to ur machine remotely (ssh/telnet ..)?

The intel i830 and i845 have been a big pain for sometime but XFree 4.3.0 supports them now. What version of mandrake linux are u using ?

Anyway, since u say a vanilla 2.4.20 kernel solves ur problem, it must certainly be an issue with the way the i830 agpgart is being handled. Its likely that the version lf mandrake has an older kernel that is creating the problem. U can look up http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~chak/linux/c400.html where a variety of fixes are available.

Hi,

thank you for your answer.

I'm using Mandrake 9.1

Also if i recompile mandrake's standard kernel (2.4.21) and get rid of all the things i don't need in kernel's configuration, the problem is solved too, which makes me think of a conflict between two things in the original kernel.

Don't know what though :-(

I searched the web and newsgroups and several other people have exactly the same problem with the same laptop model.

gamito,

So it seems that mandrake's patched kernel 2.4.21 is the source of the problem. U should report this as a bug in https://qa.mandrakesoft.com . Since removing kernel features solves the problem, it is most likely that one/some of mandrake's patches are not working. If u look at http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/Status17.html#17 , it says that

The 830M and later can be used without AGP GART support
so I am wondering if ur custom kernel has removed AGP GART support and has avoided the problem (assuming that the problem is related to the use of AGP GART).

No, i didn't remove AGP GART's support.

Hi gamito

Have you updated your Omnibook XE3 bios version to 1.14 ?

It might be resolved lot of problems with i830 chipset on this laptop.

Got the same...
