DOA
I have Mandrake 9.1 installed but there is only sound coming from the rear speakers and not from the front. I am using the onboard SoundMax sound on my P4PE with my Logitech Z-540 speakers. How do I get it working?
Guest fubar::chi
maybe alsa is using oss emulation. you can reconfigure everything in the mandrake control center or typing draksound in a console.
DOA
Draksound says it is using the snd-intel8x0 (Intel 82801AA,82901AB,i810,i820,i830,i840,i845,MX440; SiS 7012; Ali 5455) driver. I don't know where to configure alsa
Guest fubar::chi
I thought draksound could do that, if not you can configure it using harddrake.
DOA
I could not run harddrake (command not found). How do I configure alsa? I'm not sure if I have it installed.
Guest fubar::chi
You have to issue the command as root to get it to work. This is for both harddrake and draksound. And alsa can be configured by either <pause> harddrake or draksound. maybe the command is hardrake. Type hard at the command line and then press the [Tab] key. DOA
It was harddrake2. When I click on the Soundcard and then Configure module, I get a pop-up box to enter 4 things: ftsodell, clocking, strict_clocking, spdif_locked. What am I supposed to do? Sorry, I'm quite new with Linux.
Guest fubar::chi
click on Run config tool draksound tells you whether or not have have alsa or OSS emulation running if alsa isn't running you can change that here
Guest ndeb
draksound has bugs and often it ends up configuring the system for two drivers, which is meaningless since the system always uses one sound driver for a sound card at one given time. Its much safer to modify the system files directly. Please post the output of these commands: cat /proc/pci cat /etc/modules.conf Draksound says it is using the snd-intel8x0 (Intel 82801AA,82901AB,i810,i820,i830,i840,i845,MX440; SiS 7012; Ali 5455) driver. I don't know where to configure alsa The driver snd-intel8x0 is an ALSA driver. So ur system is indeed using an ALSA driver. But if u want u can also try the OSS driver for the same card called i810_audio. If u run modinfo i810_audio you will get parm: ftsodell int parm: clocking int parm: strict_clocking int parm: spdif_locked int which show the parameters that this driver accepts. Guest fubar::chi
::slap myself:: I forgot to ask the most imp't question. Are you sure the volume is turned up? You can check using aumix and by turning the sound up on your speaker

Guest ndeb
The output of cat /etc/modules.conf is missing. This file decides what sound driver is to be loaded by the system. Ur audio card is Bus 0, device 31, function 5: <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Audio (rev 2). <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> IRQ 9. <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> I/O at 0xa800 [0xa8ff]. <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> I/O at 0xa400 [0xa43f]. <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd4800000 [0xd48001ff]. <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xd4000000 [0xd40000ff].<!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> an intel 8x0 card (integrated with ur intel 845G motherboard). My system is saying it is using the OSS driver when I open the Sound Configuration. I can't change it to ALSA. My volume is also turned up.Draksound is not a reliable tool, in my experience. The best way is to look at the sound related entries in /etc/modules.conf .
DOA
cat /etc/modules.conf gives me: probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi probeall usb-interface usb-uhci ehci-hcd alias eth0 bcm4400 alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 options bttv radio=0 card=34 gbuffers=4 above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss options i810_audio spdif_locked=int strict_clocking=int ftsodell=int clocking=int above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss Is there something wrong with this? I am not hearing any sound at all now.[/code]
Guest ndeb
<!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin-->alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0<!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> options i810_audio spdif_locked=int strict_clocking=int ftsodell=int clocking=int <!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss<!--QuoteEBegin--><!--QuoteEBegin--> These are all the sound related entries. As expected, draksound has done a horrible job of screwing up. It has configured the system for three different drivers: snd-emu10k1 (supposed to be for Sound Blaster cards) i810_audio snd-intel8x0 Just note that there can only be one driver loaded for a sound card at any one time. You should comment out all the following lines as: #above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss #options i810_audio spdif_locked=int strict_clocking=int ftsodell=int clocking=int Also, I think you should report this as a bug in https://qa.mandrakesoft.com/ . Anyway, please post the output of the command cat /proc/modules As said before u have two drivers for ur card: i810_audio (OSS/Free) snd-intel8x0 (ALSA 0.9.x) Currently it is using snd-intel8x0. 1. To configure for i810_audio, comment out all sound-related entries in /etc/modules.conf except these: alias sound-slot-0 i810_audio Then, in mandrake control center, go to services and restart the sound service. 2. To configure for snd-intel8x0, comment out all sound-related entries in /etc/modules.conf except these: alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss Then, in mandrake control center, go to services and restart the sound service. Is it supposed to be like that? Also, the sound is very soft and sounds a bit distorted (maybe because I have the volume set high). I have set the volume to 100% in Aumix, KMix, XMMS, and my speakers. Here is what etc/modules.conf looks like: probeall scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi probeall usb-interface usb-uhci ehci-hcd alias eth0 bcm4400 alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0 #options bttv radio=0 card=34 gbuffers=4 #above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss #options i810_audio spdif_locked=int strict_clocking=int ftsodell=int clocking=int above snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss Edit: With Kmix open, when I hover the mouse over the speaker icon in the panel, is displays a label saying "Volume 31%" even though the volume slider is all the way to the top. I am thinking this is my problem but don't know where to set it to 100%.
