:wall: Guys i am running mandriva powerpack 2008 on a gateway mx6750 laptop. There are a few issues that piss me off but i will try my best to figure them out before botherring you guys but this one is just pissing me off. I switched from Fedora 8 to openSUSE 10.3 to powerpack 2008 ( current ) because of this but still nothing so the problem goes deeper than i thought.

I have a philips sdvd8441 cd/dvd burner and k3b/gnomebaker fail to burn or simulate anything and gives me an input output error. This is the output from the debugging window on k3b.

Now this is the stuff i get when i run k3b from the console to observe the output. There are no other error messages displayed there

(K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed.

(K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed.

(K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed.

(K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed.

this happens right when i click on the burn button in k3b.

I tried enabling dma on the drive which was suggested to me on suseforums but i dont think it works for scsi devices anyways it gives me this error which i dont think it should just by doing hdparm /dev/sr0

/dev/sr0:

IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)

readonly = 0 (off)

readahead = 256 (on)

HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

My burner works on windows xp so it is not a hardware problem. This is really frustrating and if someone could just give me a hand id really appreciate it. I like linux and am trying to learn as much as i can and i want to replace windows with it but ireally need my internal burner. Any help will be appreciated

The fact that the problem occurs on three different Linux OSs would seem to indicate that the Philips device is not compatible with LINUX, fullstop, especially since the device works in Windows..

This is a bit surprising because Philips is generally good with Linux with its products.

The only thing I can suggest is to try another brand of DVD/CD drive and see if it is the Drive or the system.

It is the sort of thing you would have to do if you were running Windows only, and had a seemingly burner problem so needed to know if it was the burner device or the OS.

Cheers. John.

I just realized that it could simply be the discs that you are trying to burn. Try a different brand. I have found a lot of noname elcheapo brands will not burn in K3B but seem to in Windows. John.

I cannot see how an atapi device (even a Plextor!) can be incompatible with Linux... perhaps John knows better.

What I've found is that this particular burner is a very mediocre one, as well as very picky at media. A lot of people reported significant improvement by flashing a new (official) firmware from Gateway (the actual hardware vendor seems being QSI).

For the record, there is the analogous of "hdparm" for SCSI/SATA devices- namely sdparm. However, in Mandy 2008 which is using the new libata driver (pretty much like any distro with kernel 2.6.20 or newer) you don't have to bother about tuning the device's DMA.

Thanks for the reply, the drive works in windows and i am burning on Sony DVD-R's, i have tried on a no name brand as well but same thing. I have also tried burning cd-r but no look there either.It's possible that the drive is not compatible with linux, but i am hoping i wouldnt have to spend money on a new one if this one is functional. Funny thing is it wont even simulate successfully, and it fails at different percentages everytime.

do you of any usb burners that are 100% compatible with linux? id rather have an internal one but 3 different distros fail me and i am starting to lose hope.

Ill give this a try thank you very much for the sdparm as well i was a little confused about that. feel stupid reading all those manual pages and then finding hdparm doesnt even apply for scsi devices heh. But ill try out the firmware with crossed fingers.

You can also try a different firmware revision and see if it gets any better... I've found one at Packard Bell:

http://support.packardbell.com/uk/item/ind...platform_k2s_dc

Using a windows flasher under Linux isn't easy, but doable.

Your burner isn't SCSI... but the new libata thing registers ATA and SATA devices as /dev/sdx and Atapi devices as /dev/srx, that's why they look as being SCSI. Technically it make no difference.

i tried both firmwares PA48 and PX47, flashed them with windows but they both fail as well. actually for the first time a simulation was successfull using the PX47 firmware with a write speed of 2x but when i tried it again it failed with the usual input/output error. Are there any kernel modules or some package that could be causing this? I think the kernel cannot get the proper configuration for the device and thats why it fails. in any of the simulations, the write speed even though set at auto has never exceeded 2x and the drive is capable of 8x. There are no messages in dmesg. .xsesson-errors shows this (K3bDevice::Device) /dev/sr0: GET CONFIGURATION length det failed.

its funny how the simulation actually completed successfully but the second time it failed. i am clueless though.

Actually I support Scarecrows remark about questioning the device incompatability in Linux hence my later comment about the possibility of disc failures, as an afterthought.

What has me puzzled is the fact that three different distros show the same problem leading me to suspect that there is something strange about the device itself regardless of it working in Windows. It maybe that this particular device is incompatable with Linux and not necessarily all of this particular model, i.e. it has a fault.

Cheers. John.
