I don't have KDE or Gnome installed, but I think that in Konqueror you go to the View menu, and there will be a submenu in there for preview, and you can select what you want to preview. I imagine that it would be similar for Gnome/Nautilus. If it's not there, then try right-clicking above it and see if there is anything in the Context menu that pops up.
