Hello guys. New computer, new challange getting DVD's to play.

I'm getting the following error during xine-check:

Please be patient, this script may take a while to run...

[OUCH!!] You're running me with root permissions?

You should definitely run xine as normal user, not root. Running it as

root will expose you to some severe security issues.

This script should run as the same user that you would use to run

xine. If you run me as root (as you currently are), I cannot check

if your real-life user has sufficient permissions...

Unless you want to recheck something with root permissions, you should

abort me now (press Ctrl-C) and run me from your usual account.

press <enter> to continue...

[ good ] you're using Linux, doing specific tests

[ good ] looks like you have a /proc filesystem mounted.

[ good ] You seem to have a reasonable kernel version (2.6.17-5mdv)

[ good ] intel compatible processor, checking MTRR support

[ good ] you have MTRR support and there are some ranges set.

[ good ] found the player at /usr/bin/xine

[ good ] /usr/bin/xine is in your PATH

[ hint ] several instances of xine-config found in your PATH

xine-config executables have been found in these places:

/usr/bin/xine-config

/usr/local/bin/xine-config

This probably means you have several versions of xine-lib installed.

It's probably best to uninstall all unused xine-libs.

Further tests will use /usr/bin/xine-config.

press <enter> to continue...

[ good ] plugin directory /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.2 exists.

[ good ] found input plugins

[ good ] found demux plugins

[ good ] found decoder plugins

[ good ] found video_out plugins

[ good ] found audio_out plugins

[ good ] skin directory /usr/share/xine/skins exists.

[ good ] found logo in /usr/share/xine/skins

[ good ] I even found some skins.

[ good ] /dev/cdrom points to /dev/hdc

[ good ] /dev/dvd points to /dev/hdc

[ good ] DMA is enabled for your DVD drive

[OUCH!!] The 'xvinfo' binary hasn't been found.

Xv is the X Video extension and xvinfo is a diagnostic tool for Xv.

xine can use Xv to support hardware accelerated scaling and color space

conversion of videos, which increases performance, especially on slow

machines.

Xv has been introduced with XFree86 4.0, so if you're still using an older

X server, you might consider an upgrade.

Note: You also need a Graphics card that has Xv driver support.

You might want to check the XFree86 homepage before upgrading:

http://www.xfree86.org

press <enter> to continue...

I the last error seems to be the most important. I've no idea how to deal with it. I've other computers with mandriva installed with the same hardware. This problem is pretty new. Anyways i'd appreciate any help offered. Thanks.

Add the xvinfo package. If you have not already done so use the Easy Urpmi link at the top of this board to add your sources, then from commandline as root type: urpmi xvinfo that should do the trick. :)

You need to install a package called ......libdvdcss...... which you get from PLF. You will need to set up easy-urpmi which you can initiate by clicking on it on the top right side of this page and follow its instructions. Fairly simple actually. Then open konsole and go su then your root password. Then paste in the site line you get from easy-urpmi for plf and click enter.

When it is complete then close konsole and open MCC and proceed to Software management.

In the search box type in libdvdcss and it will find it for you , tick to select and follow on from there.

You cannot play a dvd movie on your computer without it no matter what other packages are suggested.

Cheers. John.

I did the urpmi xvinfo and not that's just fine. I try to watch the DVD and get this.

This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.4.

libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.

My only problem is that I do have livdvdcss installed. According to MCC.

xine check reveals this now.
