M2006 - Extra eth0 + network not accessible

Just installed M2006 Limited Edition onto an old machine that was running WinXP. Now I cannot connect to the LAN. Ifconfig seems to be showing an extra ethernet adapter - I have eth0 and eth0:9 - there's only 1 card in the box. Even with the "extra" ethernet, I still get "network is not accessible" if I try to ping the router - ping to localhost (127.0.0.1) works ok. It's an old PCI card (DLink DE-530+). I've spent the day fiddling and googling without success. Any pointers?

There other weird thing I've noticed is that some of the edits I've made by hand to, say, /etc/.../ifcfg-eth0 get changed somehow the next time I look at them. Maybe I'm editing a temp copy?

My Linux/Unix is pretty rusty, any help appreciated.

Chris
