Guest linuxbox
Hello, first off let me start out by displaying my hardware setup: CPU Type DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, 3200 MHz (8 x 400) Motherboard Name Asus P5W DH Deluxe System Memory 1024 MB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM) Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 7100 GS (512 MB) Drive #1 - WDC WD2500KS-00MJB0 (232 GB) that hard disk is a Serial ATA drive. problem is when i boot the DVD to install, things are unGodly slow and partitioning the disk is like turtle slow. for over 24 hours it hasn't even finished 25 percent of the disk!!!!! something just isn't right. i did see before it started partitioning that it installed a driver for the disk but it's just sitting there on "formatting partition on sda1". i'm going to have to kill that though..just is taking far too long. is there something special i need to be aware of for my hardware config for mandriva 2007 in this situation? i hate knowing i can install a windows OS with ease on this hardware but not my beloved Linux!!! YUCK!! : ) any guidance is greatly appreciated!
mindwave
hate to say it, but that smells an awful lot ,like a HD issue. is that a known good drive? have you used it in anything else before? did you partition/format BEFORE you started or is this the 1st time its been done? my suggestion is to dload something small MCNL perhaps? and try an install that (knoppix maybe), or even winblows and see if you get the same slow install. I had issues with MDV on an SATA drive where my MAIN boot partition was an ATA. finally i moved everything to the ATA and use the SATA as data, and it flys. my system is very similar except I'm uning an ECS pm400 MB and a VERY cheap geforce4MX vid card
Guest linuxbox
it's a brand new drive. this system is exactly the same as the one next to it running windows 2003 server with zero issues! drive was unformatted upon install...first time it's been done. ok, update...went into bios and set the SATA settings to AHCI and it's fine now!!! that's the only thing i changed...i'm not sure exactly what that means as far as performance goes but mandriva installed the Intel ahci driver and it's formatting just fine now...seems very fast.. any thoughts? tyme
Basically, it allows you to be able to remove the drive while the system is up and running (assuming, of course, the drive isn't where the OS is installed) and also lets the hard drive itself determine the best order in which to execute read/write commands from the OS. The second could help improve performance and possibly life of the drive (possibly - not sure).
