Only a White Screen after enabling 3D

I just installed and configured a good portion of Mandriva 2007 Free. After getting the nvidia drivers to work correctly with the Geforce 6600 card (It's old, I know), I went into config and enabled the 3D support for the desktop. Now, whenever I start linux, halfway through the loader screen (when it's initializing modules through the gui) my screen turns all white. I eventually hear the login music chime that mandriva graces us with, however no visuals are there. Just a big white nothing. How can I disable that 3D support through the terminal, and secondly how can I get into terminal at all when my inittab file is set to 5?

EDIT: By "disable that 3D support" I mean to disable AIGLX and / or Xgl. AIGLX worked ok initially (just slow), it's Xgl that's making my screen go all white

Some more information for you all: the problem occurs just after the gui says "initializing peripherals", when it's in the "Loading the..." stage (can't read what it says fully because thats when the screen does what it does). The gui box on the screen goes white and the rest of the screen goes black, then when it's at the point of loading the desktop it shows the taskbar in all white, then a little later the background goes from black to white as well...making everything white.

EDIT: alright, I just figured out how to disable xgl through the console by using the /etc/sysconfig/xgl file. So everything works fine now...however I still would like to find out why xgl wasn't working right and fix that, as I hear AIGLX doesn't work well at all with NVidia cards. And I would like some kind of 3d Desktop. Any suggestions?

p.s., thanks for moving this to the appropriate section spinynoman :)

I don't use it because it's a resource hog, but I checked out compiz and it worked ok on my 'very old' Geforce4 Ti4200 with Xgl.

I should add that I'm using nvidia-8774-4plf2007.0 and dkms-nvidia-8774-4plf2007.0

3D desktops are still pretty buggy, so I wouldn't count on them as on a stable environment. Of course I read some info from people using it without bigger problems, but I'm affraid it all depends on the hardware You have. Till now I couldn't make AIGLX or XGL to work properly on my Radeon X800Pro i.e. They're nice if You are curious and just want to play for a while, but not yet to work on them all the time. That's of course my own opinion.

Hi,

I am having the same problem too. May I know how to disable xgl through the console? I am using Mandriva 2007 which will automatically start X after boot up. It is working fine under AIGLX option for me. How can I switch back to AIGLX option since my desktop was gone.

BTW, I have donwloaded the driver from NVIDIA side. And I saw Greg2 is using nvidia-8774-4plf2007.0 and dkms-nvidia-8774-4plf2007.0. Just wonder whether I am using the correct driver. I am new to Linux, I didn't really know about these files (in bold). Do I really need these files? If yes, may I know where to get these files?

THanks @!
