null
I want to add non-free and multimedia sources to my sources.list file. I have already successfully added debian-multimedia.org (and the gpg key). The problem is adding non-free. I have googled this, and found several debian non-free help threads. ... problem is... they all say to do different things... or at least they all use different syntax... the place I am looking at now says to add this: deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian/etch main non-free contrib deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ etch main non-free contrib deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main non-free contrib deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main non-free contrib Many places substitute ftp.us.debian... or ftp.fi.debian... or just ftp.debian... also some places word the end part like this: main contrib non-free other places word it like this: main non-free contrib I have tried three ways, and when I do an apt-get update, it gives an error on the above sources. "failed to fetch..." (not found) seems like a simple thing to do, I added non-free under FC several times, and mandriva. Would be nice if debian help sites would give consistent advice.
arctic
Might be helpful: http://debian.cruisix.net/debian/README.mirrors.html Some mirrors are up 24/7, while some are not. Also, some mirrors get temporary overloads, that is why they might timeout. Anyway, a "failed to fetch" response means usually that the mirror is down or that your config file ain't okay. Those work for me (partly german mirrors btw.) deb http://debian.tu-bs.de/debian/ etch main deb-src http://debian.tu-bs.de/debian/ etch main deb http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ etch main contrib non-free deb-src http://security.debian.org/ etch/updates main contrib
null
yes, I was hoping the "failed to fetch" was the fault of the mirror, and not my sources.list... will play around with it when I get home from work tonight. For everything multimedia, is the "debian-multimedia.org" source enough? Do I need any other sources, such as marillat ? another question: I let debian use the entire hard drive the second install and make its own decisions, and I think it gave itself less than 300 MB for the / partition. Is that normal? seems small. Edited January 23, 2007 by null
arctic
debian-multimedia.org is the only repo that you should need (I don't even need that one for my purposes). 300 MB for / is impossible. A default install of Debian Etch with Gnome 2.14 needs some 2.7 GB. Did it create perhaps a /boot partition? That would make more sense. null
I posted the df results after the 2nd install (at the end of the original thread). I selected "Guided Partitioning" with the option of separate /home. It made its decisions and I said OK go ahead and write changes... arctic
*shrug* As long as it doesn't complain about too lite space available...
polemicz
I don't know if there are security updates for contrib and non-free. Also your first line has no space between debian/ and etch (/debian/etch should be /debian/ etch) which may be a problem. I use the ftp.debian.org repositories also and almost never have problems accessing them.
arctic
For contrib, there are security patches, for non-free there aren't.
null
Also your first line has no space between debian/ and etch (/debian/etch should be /debian/ etch) which may be a problem. thanks, that must have been it. It works fine now. I installed the nvidia kernel module, and nvidia-glx and then did the xserver reconfiguration (man there were A LOT of questions). Then did a restart, and then ran glxinfo and it reported direct rendering "Yes" so I guess I did everything OK... During the xserver reconfig questions, I told it to use the "nvidia" module, so I suppose I don't need to do modprobe nvidia. In other words, will it load at every boot without doing modprobe? edit: so far I love my "shiny new distro" as arctic calls it. A friend asked me the other day if I was going to buy windows Vista ... ha ha ha... I never bought XP. I still have win2k. null
Problem: printing from this debian machine to an HP printer connected to my win2k box. Both machines are connected to a DHCP router. I was able to get this done once before (under mandriva 2006).
arctic
You will have to set up samba-printing. Check the documentation, section 3.6. http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/reference/index.en.html and of course http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO/ , especially section 11.2 onwards http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO/n...work-to-windows

Marillat has moved/merged his stuff to debain-multimedia I installed the nvidia kernel module, and nvidia-glx and then did the xserver reconfiguration (man there were A LOT of questions). These can be quite involved, especially for server apps where you can choose to delete the data or not etc. The biggest shock I had moving to apt was the amount of questions it asks... in some ways its off-putting if you are used to urpmi because it leaves the app configured ... but you soon get used to it and the nice thing is it can dig you out of so many holes when you break something (if you like to meddle)
