Resolution does not match what's selected

I have an Xerox XM3-19W 19" widescreen monitor. Max res: 1440x900. Horizontal range: 30KHz-82KHz. Vertical range: 56KHz-75KHz. (ranges are according to manufacturer). My xorg.conf seems okay, but I'm no expert. I won't post it unless I need to, it is very long.

In XFdrake, I select my resolution at 1440x900 24bpp and click test. My monitor goes out of range, displaying the message 1600x1200 / 65Hz. I give up, I don't know what's wrong with it. It is constantly stuck in 1024x768, which is so blurry it hurts my eyes.

One odd thing, the login screen appears crisper. The menu on my monitor says 1280x1024. I don't see how it can go 1024 pixels high, but it's just a point. Is the horrible square mess around my cursor also an indication of problems?
