iphitus
ianw1974: that laptop is too old for apm. It's bios simply wouldnt support it, which is why it caused problems -- it couldnt use standard acpi routines to address things. as for the CD theory, what's the CD? audio? data? self burnt or otherwise? ianw1974
I thought acpi was more advanced than apm (apm being much older?).

ianw1974
I'd have thought the same for my Athlon XP1800+, but seems this is the only way I can get it to shut down with any distro using a 2.6.17.x kernel or higher since acpi doesn't do what it's supposed to. A bit OT but.... apm is a disaster all by itself... since MS "accidentally" didn't follow the spec's in Win98 it forced all the hardware people to actually break apm so it would work with Win98.... but obviously since the source is closed they all had to hack different workarounds... so the only thing you can say for sure is if apm works with Win98 then its broken
