Kieth
My graphics are not working right, so I thought I would try installing some ATI drivers. Reading another post, ianw1974 said to use the command urpmi dkms-ati. I did, and I was told that I would have to install a new pachage. This is not a problem, I just wanted to know which is best. Thanks. # urpmi dkms-ati One of the following packages is needed: 1- kernel-source-stripped-2.6.17.5mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code of the Linux kernel stripped for post build (to install) 2- kernel-tmb-source-2.6.17.13-4mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The Linux source code for kernel-tmb-2.6.17.13-4mdv (to install) 3- kernel-tmb-source-stripped-2.6.17.13-4mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The stripped Linux source code for kernel-tmb-2.6.17.13-4mdv (to install) 4- kernel-source-2.6.17.5mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code for the Linux kernel (to install) 5- kernel-linus-source-2.6.18.rc7.1mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code for the Linux kernel (to install) 6- kernel-multimedia-source-2.6.17.13-3mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code for the Linux kernel-multimedia-2.6.17.13-3mdv (to install) 7- kernel-linus-source-stripped-2.6.18.rc7.1mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The source code of the Linux kernel stripped for post build (to install) 8- kernel-multimedia-source-stripped-2.6.17.13-3mdv-1-1mdv2007.0.i586 : The stripped source code for the Linux kernel-multimedia-2.6.17.13-3mdv (to install) What is your choice? daniewicz
From a terminal type uname -a to list your currently installed kernel version. All those packages you listed have kernel versions/numbers in them. You must match your kernel number with the number listed in the package. I would also avoid the packages that give a stripped kernel.
scarecrow
uname -a This will give you enough info about your running kernel, and which source package you have to install. Ideally, kernel packages should be built with enough info in the .spec file so the source package should be installed automatically, but this does not seem to be the case in Mandriva. The "stripped" packages are much smaller, and not sufficient to build your own custom kernel, but they are good enough for building kernel modules, including the ATi ones. daniewicz
PS: an old fox has beaten me bigtime.. If you are referring to me sir, I am no fox I didn't know the stripped kernel source was sufficient for installing video drivers. scarecrow
Yes, it is sufficient. For building ATi and nvidia modules only the kernel headers are needed, not the full kernel source. Full kernel-source is normally needed only if one intends to build his own customized kernel (which is always a good idea, but AFAIK few people attempt that).
