Guest psue99
Hi, I have an old PII (AOpen; 384 MB RAM)) box that I decided to load Linux on. I tried Xandros OCE 3.0.2 and I didn't get very far into the Install before it failed. Then I treid MEPIS 6.0, but when I tried playing an audio CD, the drive started making awful noises. I decided to give Mandriva a try, so I downloaded Mandriva One 2006. The install went seamlessly. But when I tried to play an Audio CD, nothing happens when I click play. Then I tried playing an MP3 file that I downloaded off the Net; Amarok briefly starts up then vanishes (teh MP3 file is fine 'cause it works on my other Linux box as wel las on Windows). I noticed in the Mandriva Linux Control Center that no sound card is listed. My card is Sound Blaster 16. How can I get Mandriva torecognzie my sound card? I'm a bit discouraged .... if I can't get this resolved, I'll try another distro I guess :( Thanks, Paul

ianw1974
Have you tried alsaconf to configure it? Do this: su (enter root password when prompted) alsaconf if not installed, install with: urpmi alsaconf and then go from there. It should do all of the sound config for you including the modprobe.conf stuff.
