Trouble with Mandriva download and partitions...

Hello folks,

Just setup a Mandriva download of the i586 DVD iso image last night from the GAtech FTP and it appeared to be dl'ing fine so I let it go overnight on an HSI connection thinking it would be ready to burn to DVD in the morning... however it errored out on me... I thought that my machine went to sleep or something... so I set up the download, went for a run and came back and watched the tail end of it finish the download. It gets to the 2047mb or 2.47gb download mark and says something about converting and then I get a message saying "a network error has occured" when I check the properties of my download manager. I am downloading the file on a Mac OS10 G4 Ibook at the moment caus it is the only machine with a dvd burner available to burn the iso image. I just was wondering if it tried to convert for updates on my Mandrake download or if it failed in the download all together.... If it failed for updates, I will burn the iso image from the file that I received and install, then update later...etc... if I did not get the entire file however.. no sense in wasting a DVD.. The file looks to be the correct size also when I checked its properties... any suggestions?

Also, I run an XP pro machine and attempted to create a partition with the disk util this morning and it appears that I cannot re-size my existing drive for some reason... almost like windows has consumed the entire 60gb drive... even though I only have 11gb full... go figure... I take it my best bet would be to format the disk entirely and do partitions from the OS installs as the FAQ's have stated eh? I do have TrueImage and have already imaged my software settings..etc.. and they claim I can restore this to a partition as long as it is the same size or greater of what the space was on the drive previously.... so I think I may go that rout... If anyone knows of a way to use the disk util. otherwise in the mean time... it would be appreciated... :) Thanks

Some download programs, including browsers have problems with downloads of 2GB and more.

I suggest using an ftp program instead, perhaps FileZilla or something to download the iso, you might experience more success this way. This is how I've downloaded Mandriva ISO's.

Resizing drives can be difficult. First defragment the drive, and then resize it. Use something like Partition Magic, or when you've got the Mandriva CD, boot this, choose custom partitioning when prompted, and then resize using this. It's important to defrag, else you can't resize due to the file placements, and could potentially lose data. Of course, resizing drive partitions is always a risk, so make sure you have a data backup, or just take the risk if you fancy :P

Thanks, I found out that the GAtech FTP sites DVD iso image is corrupted after further investigation and setup to download from the Indiana one instead. :D I have yet to check it when I get back to my machine, but I am fairly certain it should hopefully work. lol

Thanks for the info about partitioning also, I was thinking I could use XP's disk util, but of course I forgot that Windows doesn't like to play nice with other stuff you are trying to do outside of it... Someone else also suggested http://zeleps.com/ to re-size and play with the partitions. By the time I am said and done playing with partitions though, I might need to invest in that larger 250gb hard drive that I have been eying for a while... :D Thanks again for the input.
