how can I get the terminal to show up. Ctrl-Alt-F# didnt really worked anymore ever since I install 2006.0. I wonder if they check that off by default, is there a way I can fix this?

open xorg.conf and check for the following option:

Option "DontVTSwitch" "boolean"

This disallows the use of the Ctrl+Alt+Fn sequence (where Fn refers to one of the numbered function keys). That sequence is normally used to switch to another "virtual terminal" on operating systems that have this feature. When this option is enabled, that key sequence has no special meaning and is passed to clients. Default: off.

make sure this is set to false.

If that's not the issue, try checking for an upgrade to xlibs-data. This second suggestion is just a guess, because of this, but that was a debian problem so it may not be the same issue you're having.
