Graphics Driver Not Working

I'm installing Mandriva10.1 free edition on Virtual PC and i'm getting this error message on my video card:

"An error occured (EE) No Devices Detected"

My video card is a Gforce FX 5600 128MB.

I tried just about all the drivers they offer in the list but none seem to work.

Any help would be great. Also i'm kind of a newbie. I used Mandrake 9 a bit ago but didn't get deep into it.

10.1 Official might be a little old for it, but you could get it working. You would require downloading the drivers from NVidia to get your card running.

Their instructions are very easy, but require that you have your kernel-source installed for the driver to compile into the kernel.

You might be better trying LE2005 or 2006.

This is your best bet, I'm presuming a 32 bit system:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display...2_1.0-8174.html

if AMD 64 bit, then choose this link:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display...4_1.0-8174.html

LE2005 is much newer than 10.1 Official. The latest is 2006, and I'm now using this on practically all my systems, except two. Currently have 5 systems running 2006.

Well I would probably be better off with the latest version.... Would you have an ftp link for the ISO's?

I'm not sure if i'll be able to install them using Virtual PC.

If not i'll give those drivers a try..

Thanks for your help.

You can try this ftp server:

anorien.csc.warwick.ac.uk

just type this in the connection box, then head to:

/Mandriva/official/iso/10.2/i586/

for the LE2005 version. For 2006 head to:

/Mandriva/official/iso/2006.0/i586/

They have CD and DVD versions. I tend to use DVD, one disk for everything, else you will need 3 x CD images. Although you could get a basic installation with 1 x CD image, it's probably best with all 3.

After installation, you should get a basic graphical interface, but for the best graphical output, you will still need the drivers from NVidia. The basic interface will give you a GUI, but no acceleration.

  • 3 months later...

Remember, if kat is installed, this will slow it down as well. Also lisa, so remove these by:

urpme kat
urpme lisa

you should notice a jump in speed after that.
