MFM
Every time when starting GNOME I`ve got an error message: 'There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon. Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly. The Settings Daemon restarted too many times. The last error message was: Child process did not give an error message, unknown failure occurred GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.' Please suggest what should I do, because I even reinstalled GNOME, but the problem still exists.
arctic
Try removing the hidden gnome and gconf files in your home directory. I guess that reverting everything to its initial status should fix it.
MFM
Thanks a lot. I removed '.gconf' and '.gconfd' folders and the error message disappeared.
Guest OmeRga
Hey guys I have a similar problem. I get the same error msg except for the last part. It reads: "The name org.gnome.SettingsDeamon was not provided in any .service files" I removed the gconf and gconfd files, but the msg is still there Also, the windows on GNOME have no boarders and rgt click on the desktop doesn't do anything I'm running Mandriva Free 2007 with KDE but want to have GNOME as well. I installed using "urpmi gnome-desktop; urpmi gnome-panel; urpmi gnome-session" Any ideas how to fix these? Thanks in advance:)
tyme
rm -rf ~/.gnome* Not that you will loose all of your settings and the desktop will return to a complete default stage. You may also find it useful to: rm -rf ~/.gtk*
Guest OmeRga
It didn't work. I installed gnome today, so this might be its defult stage. Maybe I'm missing packages or something.. Also, just found that file manager (don't know the name of the gnome program) doesn't work and there is no terminal program anywhere to be found. I ran the commands from KDE

Guest OmeRga
Thanks for all your help. The error msg is gone and most things are fixed. I still have no borders on the windows and there's a problem with my windows manager. For example, when I click the show desktop button, I get an error msg "your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager". 10x very much:)
