ral
I was wondering, since you can unmount drives in Linux, would it be possible to physically remove an ordinary ATA IDE HD after unmounting it, without powering down the PC. If the answer to this is yes could I than slide a new hard drive in and mount it? Kind of like a poor mans hot-swap drive :) Doubt it but wanted to ask. Too ckicken to try it myself less a short out my MB or something.
Pzatch
From everything I've ever known No. To much chance of a spark or static discharge frying the other components.
ral
Thanks Pzatch... Okay, I guess we will eventually have to buy the Promise Technologies RAID card and the hot-swap bays (and have to learn how to use them in Linux). Guest JaseP
Pzatch is right. You can use the cases to unmount after power-down (especially if you configure them right in your configuration files). But you should never try to physically remove a drive while your PC is running. That said, there are, apparently, more expensive cases that allow you to remove drives on the fly like that. You might consider getting for example a USB 2.0 case that permits the use of standard IDE drives (once USB 2.0 is fully supported that is). I'm not sure if they are configured to work with Linux or not. Also, there are cases like that for RAID arrays... But you get what you pay for, obviously. ral
Went to see the local distributor of Promise Technology here and met their boss (boy was he young)... anyway, they can set me up with a low cost RAI solution (SMARAID card and two hot swap bays) for $220 or so. I was thinking of trying software raid and mobile racks Well, what can I say, times are bad over here.
