Guest richard_haggath
i am really new to linux like 3 days new. but i have the following spec. 1.8GHz athlon 256 Mb 333 Mhz ddr ram 40 gig hard drive partition 1 xp home 30 gig partition 2 mandrake 9.0 including swap partition total 10 gig geforce 3 ti200 i installed mandrake in expert mode and defined a manual swap partition. the symptoms i had were when i opened a piece of software the compuetr took ages to respond and with little or no hard drive activity as the program slowly loaded to memory. once the program was loade it ran like a dream. pmpatrick
Here's a link on speed up tweaks you might find useful. It discusses some of the things already mentioned plus has some additional tips: http://www.desktop-linux.net/speedtweaks.htm The performance you describe is definetly subpar for linux give your more than adequate hardware. gregor
swap partition total 10 gig IMHO 1.5GB (3/2 of RAM) swap partition would still be big enough if you plan one day to upgrade RAM to 1GB. Why do you need 10GB swap partition?
Guest richard_haggath
i wrote partition 2 mandrake 9.0 including swap partition total 10 gig so if you read correctly then my linux partition is 10 gig in total including 800Mb swap partition. i maybe a linux noob but i do know something about computers.
