when I start gxine I get this error

$ gxine

gtkvideo: couldn't open video driver

Segmentation fault

When I start xine itself, I see the splash screen and then it quits without any messages.

Can someone point in the right direction for fixing this please?

Install strace ( urpmi strace as root ) and then under a normal console:

strace -o /home/ffrr/gxinedbg.txt gxine

(assuming that your are user "ffrr", else change the path accordingly).

Then check the debug file gxinedbg.txt file, usually it's long but the actual error messages are located somewhere at the end of the textfile.

Thanks for the tip. I did it, but I must admit I don't understand all the stuff in the file.

However, it did serve to remind me that xine loads plugins as it starts. Previously I had uninstalled and reinstalled xine, but forgot about the plugins. Pulling everything off the machine, plugins included, and reinstalling seems to have fixed the problem completely.

So all is well - thanks.
