linmodem failure

I am a newbie.

I have been using the Lucent winmodem under Mandrake 10/KDE for months.

After a strange boot which asked if I wanted to configure an AUDIO device, the modem wouldn't work. Trying to run KPPP gave an error "Kppp can't find /dev/modem."

WHen I look for /dev/modem, it is there, but is shown as an unknown device.

The installation link to/from ttySLT0 is still there. and ttySLT0 is also "unknown."

The ttyLT0, which was created during install, is shown as a block device.

I still have the driver download, but don't even know how to uninstall the driver to reinstall it, IF that is what I should do.

What do I need to do?

Thanks,

Les Bunch les@bunch.mv.com NH, USA.
