Arne
In short this is what I have done. Installed the Samsung ML 1610 and open it for sharing in XP Installed cups and samba in linux box. Checked that cups and smb is running in "services". In mcc to detect printer. Samba has two choices I have only tried the first one. When you run the second time samba doesn't give this choices again. Unchecked the two first and kept the third option "find the printer connected directly to xp" Result, "Found no printer" Activated my second printer Canon S820 as shared and run mcc again. Same result No printer found. In the linux box I run: [root@192 arne3]# smbclient --list=HOST Password: Domain=[HOST] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- E$ Disk Default share IPC$ IPC Remote IPC D$ Disk Default share print$ Disk Printer Drivers SharedDocs Disk I$ Disk Default share K$ Disk Default share SamsungM Printer Samsung ML-1610 Series G$ Disk Default share Linux stuff Disk F$ Disk Default share ADMIN$ Disk Remote Admin H$ Disk Default share C$ Disk Default share J$ Disk Default share Domain=[HOST] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Server Comment --------- ------- Workgroup Master --------- ------- Then I run: [root@192 arne3]# smbclient -L SamsungM Connection to SamsungM failed I believe the problem is in linux ?????? Just for my understanding: As I stated before I have a linux driver set up from the manufacturer to be used when I connect the printer directly to the linux box. I would not use it since the printer is on the XP. But when I can use the printer from the linux box will it use the XP driver installed when my printer file goes trough the pipe to the xp box or.... What to try next ?????? Any tip to get me in the right direction Edited September 5, 2005 by Arne
Qchem
OK, you can try and configure the printer directly from the CUPS config page. Point a web browser at localhost:631 , go to "manage printers" (you'll probably be asked for your root password), "Add printer", you can then add some information about the printer, when you're asked about the printer connection, choose "Windows printer via samba" at which point you're asked for the location. I believe the syntax is: smb://username:@workgroup/host/printer Sorry if these details aren't quite correct, it's quite some time since I did this on a Mandrake machine. Arne
Response from Qchem: try localhost:631, manage printers, add Printer gives: "Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 sec ERROR: Connection failed with error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED" Device URI: smb://HOME/host/SamsungM When I try to "add printer" I get "Unauthorized This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the resource." Same error messages for both "configure printer", "Modify printer" and for "print test page" I am asked for username and password as root I believe???? or do I have to use something else???????. While I was waiting for your reply I tried to use the expert option in hardrake as follows: I try mcc expert mode. chose ML 1650 since my printer is not listed (ML-1610) Open ML-1650 and got 3 options: GhostScript + hpijs GhostScript + lj5gray GhostScript + ljet4 GhostScript + pxlmono (recommended) CHOSEN For ML-1510 the driver is: gdi I also tried ML-1710 and ML-1510 but all three NO TEST PRINT Tried smbclient -L SamsungM Connection to SamsungM failed Now I have a printer listed in "Man...Printer Management Tool 10.1" like this: Printer: SamsunM: Samsung ML-1510 on SMB/Windows server "host", share "SamsungM" (default), desc.: SAMSUNG ML-1510, Driver: gdi I have tried to print my own text files in abiword format (abw) both from shared folder in xp and local linux files but NO PRINT. How do find the SMB server host, SMB server IP which can be different from the network host and IP. REBOOT now Same problem NO Print
Qchem
I think actually adding the username@host part is important in configuring cups to use samba, if you're just using the guest account then simply: guest:@HOME/host/SamsungM should suffice. If you have a password on the windows account, the syntax changes to: smb://username:pass@workgroup/host/printer The username and password you need to configure cups is for your root account on the linux machine (hence the username is root). Arne
Thank's I am working on it. root and root password made me able to access the printer menu items. Where should: smb://username:pass@workgroup/host/printer be entered??????? Should I use the workgroup name I defined under network setup in XP? I will continue tomorrow since the time here is 21pm. Thank's and stay tuned please
Qchem
After you've been asked for the root password you'll be asked for Name: Location: and Description: - you should add something sensible for these but they can be anything you want. Click continue When you are asked for the device, select windows printer via samba (last option for me). You'll then be asked for the device URI, this is where you add the smb://username:pass@workgroup/host/printer part. The workgroup and host are the windows networking names that you've given to the print server.
Arne
Thanks this is clear, except for one thing: When you say ...../"printer part" you mean the name for the share printer which is "SamsungM" Please confirm. When I do this I get: Connection failed with error "NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME" I have been trough this with the wrong setting yesterday and it picked a driver name: "Photomax PM-1200PS (2015.1045) (EN)" THE ONLY AVAILABLE and it don't allow any entering. I don't believe this driver is right since my printer can do only 600 dpi not 1200 dpi as this driver indicate. Any tip on this???? I will play around with the network name and see if I can get it right. Thanks again
Arne
It looks like it don't accept the ':' between: username:password because the next time I modify the ':' is gone. What ca I use instead????? ......maybe '/' or....
Qchem
Perhaps the syntax is different in your version of cups to mine, but it works here. The printer name is the name of the share (SamsungM). It may be that you need to obtain some different drivers for the printer, you should be able to download a ppd file from linux printing - a quick google suggests that you should use the ML-1510 driver. This file is then placed in /usr/share/cups/model
Arne
I am close now: Linux sent warm up call to the printer, but then nothing and message: Call timed out: server did not respond after 10000 milliseconds closing remote file Test Page. Where can I increase the mulliseconds??????
Arne
The hostname that did work is MDKGROUP not HOME as I entered in the xp box. Strange??????? I read your reply "pass" as meaning password but actually it's ":pass" Maybe the time out is due to the wrong printer drivera as you mentioned in your last reply. Arne
Qchem, you know what: IT WORKS......YES IT WORKS. I am sitting here with 2 testpages and it is the most beautiful pages I have ever seen..SURE. A tremendous thank you for all the help you have given me and the patient you have shown. It is strange, I have used win since 1982 (first DOS) but I have never been so happy as when I struggle a long time in linux and finally get it to work. My "victories" so far: Winmodem in Thinkpad600 Sound on same and now Ethernet LAN, file sharing and printing to Samsung laser printer. The last one thank's to your help. My next struggle: access internet from linux box trough XPbox and wireless modem
Qchem
Congratulations, I knew you'd get it going. It might be worth starting a new thread about internet connection sharing.
