I need help getting my network working.

I've freshly installed mandriva LE2005, but the network isn't working "out of the box."

I checked the configuration from the icon in the KDE tray, and it shows me eth1-my ethernet card- is selected, and I can see my dns as well as an IP address assigned by my router, after I tried stopping and restarting the network. now I can't even access the network. when I try ifup eth1 I get the error: SIOCADDRT: network is unreachable.

help please!

*also when I try to shutdown, nidf gets stuck... what is nidf and should I have it turned off by default?
