Guest c_m_f
well basically before i installed kde 3.1 i did a reinstall of mdk 9 with no kde components, so i then installed kde from scratch. this is all fine (except the lil prob i had in the other topic) but when i log in it uses gdm but i want to use kdm, if thats the name of the kde log in programme, so how do i set it up to use kdm over gdm? beesea
edit the /etc/sysconfig/desktop file. in it, there should be line that looks something like: DISPLAYMANGER=gdm change the gdm to kdm

beesea
try checking out /etc/X11/prefdm and making sure there's an entry for kdm and verify that the path to kdm is correct. i think that since you didn't install kde, there might not be an entry for kdm in prefdm. i'm not in linux right now, so i can't really be any more specific
bvc
I remember someone mentioning a .desktop entry/folder in ~/ that needed to have KDE instead of blahblah. ???????
illogic-al
AAAAAHHHHAAAAAAAA! If it's in /usr/local/kde/bin then the OS is not going to find it by default. You need to either add /usr/local/kde/bin to you're normal user's path too but you probably did this already since it's in the installation instructions for kde.
