DVD playback

On my 10.1 box, DVD playback using kaffeine and xine is a bit rough - you can notice that the picture is jerky and sound interrupts are regular. Playback in mplayer is a lot better, which makes me think that I should be able to get the same playback quality from kaffeine and xine. Could anybody give an advice?

1. I did have a problem with sound: the default driver was not giving any sound out, I switched to i810_audio. Alsaconf stubbornly refuses to recognise my card SoundMax Cadenza saying "No supported PnP or PCI card found". Other than that, I do have sound though not of the best quality. Since the playback in mplayer of way better quality, I doubt this is a sound poroblem.

2. Here is the output of hdparm

# hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
multcount    = 16 (on)
IO_support   =  0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq    =  0 (off)
using_dma    =  0 (off)
keepsettings =  0 (off)
readonly     =  0 (off)
readahead    =  8 (on)
geometry     = 19457/255/63, sectors = 312581808, start = 0

I tried to enable dma, and got this

# hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
using_dma    =  0 (off)

Could this be related to a problem with my SATA drive not being recognized as such by 10.1 and being regarded as hda?

As for settings/audio out, could you please be more specific?
