ATI Radeon Performance

Have MDK 10.0. Installed the ATI Radeon drivers (card is 9250, R925 version).

 

I ran the fglrxconfig which is what I'm apparently supposed to do, but when I run glxgears, the performance is worse than my laptop.

 

Spec of the machine is:

 

AMD Sempron 2300, 256MB RAM, 10GB HDD, ATI Radeon 9250 128MB.

 

The glxgears comes back with 288fps, which my laptop comes back with well over double if not more! (laptop spec is Celeron 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 20GB HDD - video Intel, presume 64MB).

 

Is there anything I can do to speed this up, as the card should perform a lot better than this!!

Hi Soulse,

 

I've checked and direct rendering is "No". How can I enable it?

 

It also said "OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect".

Yeah, restarted loads, but doesn't seem any different! No idea why hmmm. Any ideas?

 

When I ran fglrxconfig, I didn't use agpgart, I said no to this, would this make a difference?

It might well, although my knowledge of ati's drivers are limited. Can't hurt to try it. You can also add it to the device section yourself if you don't feel like going through the whole config again.

 

Agpgart has to be compiled into the kernel as well, which it should be with Mandriva. Nvidia users should not use it.

Have tried using agpgart as well as without, and still seem to have problems trying to get direct rendering or fps anywhere over 280!

 

Any ideas?

Some more info:

 

DRI failed to load according to XOrg.0.log. This means only 2D acceleration is available. 3D is not. I'm also using the Mesa GLX Indirect according to the "glxinfo | grep direct" command.

 

And I'm also running LE2005 on the machine now, since I thought upgrading may help to resolve the issue. So no longer XFree86, but XOrg, and I downloaded and installed the XOrg drivers too from ATI's website).

Maybe, too late, but anyway... ATI gives you a choice between loading an internal or external AGP module. I use an external AGP module which came with the kernel. With internal AGP, my system does not come back from standby.

 

When you are asked by fglrxconfig whether you want to use internal agp module, say "No". Finish configuration, then add the line agpgart to /etc/modules (it's for 2.4.x kernel, you need to figure out an equivalent file for 2.6.x). This will make sure that the module agpgart is loaded before X starts. Reboot to activate changes, or if you're in console (init3),

# modprobe agpgart

, then login as user and startx.

 

If you need to check whether you have an agpgart module on your system, run as root

ls -R  /lib/modules/2.6.x/kernel/ |grep agpgart

To check whether it is loaded,

# lsmod |grep agpgart

I just checked, and all that matches exactly correct. Doing the ls -R gives me agpgart.ko.gz

 

agpgart appears to be loaded as it mentions nvidia-agp against it. However, I do have an ATI Video card, so unsure of what's happening here!
