hi, can anyone tell me what the actuall availability of MNF is???

I found you can download an iso at mandrake's site, but also read there is no download available and a long, complex, tutorial on how to *rebuild* it from a standard 8.2 version.

So, what the real situation is ??

Thanks in advance. siko.

This site has an iso: ftp://carroll.cac.psu.edu/pub/linux/distr...ndrake-iso/i586 , but I am puzzled by the size. It is also on this Mandrake mirror: http://mandrake.secsup.org/Mandrake-iso/i586/ . I looked at this documentation: http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/doc/90c/en....html/pt01.html (you can get this in PDF instead of html by backing up to /en/ in the URL) and it is a complete install (I did not read the configuartion chapters). There does not appear to be any requirement for 8.2 standard. If you post the URL for that, I will look at it and see what they are saying.

You might also want to look at this site: http://forums.grsecurity.net/viewtopic.php...hlight=mandrake which is the package used for the secure kernel. Again I would want to verify this as far as MNF is concerned.

One thing you should be aware of is that this product has been released under two licenses. The download edition is free as in GPL, but if you want updates you must register and pay for the product. I looked it up at the MandrakeStore here: http://www.mandrakestore.com/mdkinc/index....NG_=en#GOTO_250

I am not sure but I think that price is $199 not $1990 (that is the U.S. page) but again I would want to verify this.

When people have asked here about sending money to Mandrakesoft, I have been suggesting that they wait until the court approves a plan of reorganiztion in the bankruptcy proceedings, roughly equivalent to U.S. Chapter 11.

hi, thanks counterspy

I had already downloaded one of those isos, but this is the link that leaves me all confused.

http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~amaury/mnf/8.2.php

In particular, I don't understand where the following text stands regarding the isos at mdk's site

[...]

So, it has been decided that the latest version of the Firewall (called "Multiple Network Firewall", or "MNF" for short), while still being free software (GPLed), would *not* be available as a freely downloadable ISO. To make it clear, the packages (both binaries and source code) will be available for free download on the FTP site (and the mirrors), but the complete product (the packages + install process) won't be.

[...]

Thanks again. siko.

The dates on the document end in August of last year and I would suspect that the holes exposed are not there now. The only real way to tell without disturbing your existing installation of Mandrake is to do it as a dual install of two Mandrakes. If you have 8.2 use it. The updates are still available on most update mirrors. Otherwise try 9.0. This assumes you have or can create the space with Ranish Partition Manager from http://www.ranish.com (Windows free, uses floppy) or Linux fdisk, cfdisk or sfdisk or parted from http://www.parted.org . The ideal thing to do would be to use another machine or another drive. Dual linux installations are explained here: http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/linu...ml?dwzone=linux . There may be others that do a better job specifically for Mandrake.

You are in the best position to know whether you have a working firewall or not with what you have already downloaded. The situation may have changed since August or it may not have. Given the chaotic state and remarkable lack of any leadership on a day-to-day basis much less long run, you may be able to execute the whole thing since it makes clear in the beginning of the document than you can use cooker. Remember that beta 2 is up there now and may seriously mangle an attempt to do this since unless you can find the cooker for MNF. I found the cooker firewall list here: http://www.mail-archive.com/cooker-firewal...x-mandrake.com/ and didn't really realize it until this issue came up. You might root back and find out if this has been discussed. You might even root out a URL for a firewall cooker if one exists.

The only caution I would state is that this is in effect an end run around Mandrakesoft procedures which may have been valid in August but not now. What you do with the information is up to you since it is obviously publicly available.
