How can I Change the X resolution

I cant seem to change the X resolution it seems to be stuck on 800 x 600. Ive tried several things:

1. I goto the mandrake control panel click on the resolution app in hardware it loads for 10 seconds then returns me to the hardware app selection screen.

2. Ive tried going to the XFConfig-4 or whatever it is im on windows at the mo and cant remember, its definatly the right file though. Go through to the area which sets up resolutions look at the default colour mode and delete any references to the modes other than 1024 x 800. And then restart X. This use to work as i have always had this problem with mandrake. Not this time however.

I am using Mandrake 9.0, with an nvidia geforce 4 mx440, with the nvidia drivers installed. How else can i change the resolution

Open up a console, login as root (su) and type 'XFdrake'. There is 5 buttons there. You can change the resolution with the third button from the top. The press the 'TEST' button and once you are satisfied with the setting, press the 'QUIT' button. For the change you just did to take place, you have to restart X. So either you log out and log in again or you press CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.

Hope that help

When i try to start XF drake i get the following message:

[root@localhost graham] # XFdrake

using different removable device [/dev/hdc] for "Installation CD 1 (x86) (cdrom1)"

using different removable device [/dev/hdc] for "Installation CD 2 (x86) (cdrom2)"

using different removable device [/dev/hdc] for "International CD (x86) (cdrom3)"

I forgot to post it first time so heres my XF86Config-4 file:

If I understand right, you are trying to get high resolutions but you only get 800x600, right?

Since the defaults for the screen are correcly set to "1024x768", I guess that your problem is with the monitor configuration; I'm sure that if you take a look to "/var/log/XFree86.0.log" you'll notice that none of the high resolution modes are supported due to values out of rank. So check out that the HorizSync and VertRefresh values are right (with the monitor's manual)
