Guest ndiegel
Let me start off with the fact that I'm very unfamiliar with Linux, and have had my current 10.1 box running for a bit over a week now. I'm trying to network a W2K box with this Linux box (which will be a backup server at my work) and I've gotten to the point where I can sometimes share files, but I can never just access another computer. I don't see the Linux box at all on the W2K box, and although I can see the entire network on the Linux box, I can't access anything. The specific machine I'm trying to access has a network ID of GHOST1. Whenever I try to access it, I will receive an error that says: "The folder contents could not be displayed; You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "Windows Network: ghost1"." I've set the permissions on the W2K box to allow all access to the machine from any computer, but that doesn't have any effect. There's probably some menu that I can access on this Linux box to allow traffic, but I certainly can't find it. Any help would most definitely be appreciated. adolfix
Have you gone already to the Controle Center of Mandrakelinux ? If not go and see the Mounting points and the Local disk sharing. This allows to manage the acces on your linux box. Bye.
polemicz
How have you got Samba set up? You can set it up via MCC or localhost:901 (which I find preferable). You may want to post your /etc/samba/smb.conf file.
Guest ndiegel
@adolfix: Yes, I've gone into the Control Center; as far as Local Disk Sharing is set up, I've set it to allow all users using both SMB and NFS. In the Mounting Points section, I'm also looking at Samba mount points. I try to navigate to set the machine (ghost1) as a mounting point. I get to where it asks for the user, pass, and domain; after entering that and selecting OK, the window closes and nothing seems to happen. Am I supposed to get something after that? @polemicz: I haven't touched the smb.conf file, so I probably don't have it set up whatsoever. I'm looking through it now, and as it's mostly commented out, I'll just copy and paste the parts that seem to be active. workgroup = MDKGROUPserver string = Samba Server %v printcap name = cups load printers = yes printing = cups printer admin = @adm log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 50\ map to guest = bad user security = user encrypt passwords = yes smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 smbldap-groupshow.pl %g|awk '/^gidNumber:/ {print $2}' [homes] comment = Home Directories browseable = no writable = yes [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no [print$] path = /var/lib/samba/printers browseable = yes write list = @adm root guest ok = yes inherit permissions = yes [pdf-gen] path = /var/tmp guest ok = No printable = Yes comment = PDF Generator (only valid users) printing = bsd printcap name = cups #print command = /usr/share/samba/scripts/print-pdf file path win_path recipient IP & print command = /usr/share/samba/scripts/print-pdf "%s" "%H" "//%L/%u" "%m" "%I" "%J" & lpq command = /bin/true [TEKNSRVRGHST] path = /home/teknoserver/ghost comment = /home/teknoserver/ghost public = yes guest ok = yes writable = no wide links = no Well, I think I got it all. Now it's open field day to laugh at the newb! edit: This may not make a difference, but I'm using GNOME 2.6 as the GUI. polemicz
Is MDKGROUP the workgroup Windows is in? Samba is set up for that one, but Windows may not be in that workgroup. Make sure they are the same.

Am I supposed to get something after that? it's ready to mount the share you selected you see a button "mount" if you click that you will "mount " that share .. see the share in /mnt /XYZ . only thing is "root" mounted that share a nice tool is LinNeighborhood i recommend installing it i would also recommend installing webmin and configuring samba in the servers tab be sure to check windows networking if you want all the boxes to appear in the same workgroup and make sure you edit the samba /unix users and passwords the samba server needs to be restarted for changes to take effect you might find webmin very handy
Guest ndiegel
Well looks like I'll have some things to try out a bit later today. Thanks for all the help so far and I'll let you know how things are turning out!
polemicz
Have you added samba users? Samba users have to be added separately via smbpasswd -a user?
Guest ndiegel
No, I haven't tried adding any users. We do have an MDKGROUP workgroup on our network, but it wasn't the right one. I changed that and I'm able to do some copying of files, but the ultimate goal is for this box to be a server. Not quite there yet.
polemicz
Samba won't work without samba users. The users and passwords for authenticating users are the samba users, not your linux users. For each user who is a linux user who will be accessing samba shares you need to add them via smbpasswd -a user_name. You will then be asked for a password and they will be added.
