can't open any apps that require root privileges

i'm having a strange problem where i can't open any applications that require root privileges (such as mcc, rpm installer, system log viewer) when i'm logged in as another user. usually i'd just load the program from a menu and be asked to type in the root password. now none of the programs start. nothing happens. i've tried running them from a term and still nothing. but if i su to root and run them from a term or log in to x as root everything is fine.

i think the problem may have been caused yesterday when i had a bit of a clean-up and removed some programs i never use. i think i may have accidentally removed something i shouldn't have. the only package i could find (in mcc->install software) that i thouhgt was relevant the problem was mdkauth. i installed this but i still have the problem. any ideas?

thanks.

i'm using mdk9.0 with gnome2.
