devries
I usually look in the kinfocenter :). Hda is (always?) the master on the first ide channel, hdb the slave, hdc the master on the second ide channel and hdd the slave. My guess would be that the dvd is either hdc or hdd. devries
Sorry, that should be mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdc
ColinM
Sorry, that should be mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdc <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Both this: mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdc and this: mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdd When typed into Konsole cause the cursor to leap ahead leaving a chunk of instructions on keying options, which cannot be copied and pasted. I think it doesn't like either command. Perhaps we better leave it, we don't seem to be making any progress. Thanks for your patience and help. adamw
Never give up! :) This is how the command ought to look: mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/hdc (or /dev/hdd, obviously)

adamw
That's not good :(. Definitely looks like some kind of hardware incompatibility problem. Could be hard to fix. If you have any data DVDs, are you able to read those under Linux?
ColinM
That's not good :(. Definitely looks like some kind of hardware incompatibility problem. Could be hard to fix. If you have any data DVDs, are you able to read those under Linux? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Thanks Adam. I only have the one DVD. So it appears that my brand new E-IDE CD-RW drive, which came with my brand new branded computer is not capable of using DVDs. That seems odd, I'll try to check with the manufacturer, see what they say, and post back here. Thank you all for your help and encouragement. AussieJohn
Did I miss something ??? At the end of your last post you said....... " brand new E-IDE CD-RW drive". If that is correct then of course you do not have a drive that can read DVDs. You need a DVD -rom or DVD burner to be able to read DVDs no matter what software you try to install to read DVD. John. adamw
Ah, yes, to be entirely honest that was in my head all along as a possible reason but I just thought it was too obvious to mention. :)
