I usually look in the kinfocenter :). Hda is (always?) the master on the first ide channel, hdb the slave, hdc the master on the second ide channel and hdd the slave. My guess would be that the dvd is either hdc or hdd.

Well, first I tried c thus...

[root@localhost colin]# mplayer -dvd-devices /dev/hdc-dvd

MPlayer 1.0pre5-3.4.1 © 2000-2004 MPlayer Team

CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon/Celeron Foster 3052 MHz (Family: 8, Stepping: 9)

Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes

CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1

Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal!

To get best performance, recompile MPlayer with --disable-runtime-cpudetection.

Reading config file /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf

Reading config file /root/.mplayer/config

Unknown option on the command line: dvd-devices

[root@localhost colin]#

Then I tried d thus...

[root@localhost colin]# mplayer -dvd-devices /dev/hdd-dvd

MPlayer 1.0pre5-3.4.1 © 2000-2004 MPlayer Team

CPU: Intel Pentium 4/Xeon/Celeron Foster 2393 MHz (Family: 8, Stepping: 9)

Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes

CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1

Compiled with runtime CPU detection - WARNING - this is not optimal!

To get best performance, recompile MPlayer with --disable-runtime-cpudetection.

Reading config file /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf

Reading config file /root/.mplayer/config

Unknown option on the command line: dvd-devices

[root@localhost colin]#

Do any of those results help you understand why my DVD isn't playing?

I take it you don't think the plugin error message on the Kaffeine interface is significant?

Sorry, that should be mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdc

Both this:

mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdc and this:

mplayer -dvd-device /dev/hdd

When typed into Konsole cause the cursor to leap ahead leaving a chunk of instructions on keying options, which cannot be copied and pasted.

I think it doesn't like either command.

Perhaps we better leave it, we don't seem to be making any progress.

Thanks for your patience and help.

That's not good :(. Definitely looks like some kind of hardware incompatibility problem. Could be hard to fix. If you have any data DVDs, are you able to read those under Linux?

Thanks Adam.

I only have the one DVD.

So it appears that my brand new E-IDE CD-RW drive, which came with my brand new branded computer is not capable of using DVDs.

That seems odd, I'll try to check with the manufacturer, see what they say, and post back here.

Thank you all for your help and encouragement.

Did I miss something ???

At the end of your last post you said....... " brand new E-IDE CD-RW drive".

If that is correct then of course you do not have a drive that can read DVDs.

You need a DVD -rom or DVD burner to be able to read DVDs no matter what software you try to install to read DVD.

John.

Ahh Ta John, I assumed if it could play CDs it could also play DVDs.

Told you I was new at this stuff.

Thank you all for your patience.
