adamw
No, MandrakeUpdate is basically a 'special-case' version of the packaging tools that *only* looks at the update source, so it will only install security updates. You can use either command line urpmi or the graphical software installer, which you can run directly as 'rpmdrake', from the menu under system / configuration / packaging / Install Software , or from within Mandrake Control Center. Both urpmi and rpmdrake will be able to install any of the packages from the new media you've set up. Oh, and BTW, anti-virus for a personal machine on Linux right now is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. You are not going to get any viruses. Don't worry about it. If you use MDK and always install software from the official MDK media using urpmi or rpmdrake, you should *never* get viruses ever at all. ianw1974
OK, thanks for that, I'll hold fire for the time being! I've had a look through install sw and there's a lot listed! Although I think some point to CD4, of which I don't have. Just downloaded 10.1 DVD version, so may see if any benefit to upgrade to this.
adamw
You can use the media editing tool (edit-urpm-media from the console, or it's in the menus) to remove a bogus CD4 media, if you have one.
ianw1974
I take it I don't need this CD then? It may be that this was bundled if you bought it possibly. I think I read it somewhere in a post.....mine was downloaded from the web free.
Steve Scrimpshire
Right. CD4 is one of the mysterious Commercial Apps CDs that come with PowerPack, I believe.
ianw1974
I think I'll remove it from the list to save on confusion. And then if I select anything from the list that doesn't install, I'll try and source another way. I do have 10.1 on DVD so I can always upgrade if it's a real prob! Many thanks to you all for your help!
adamw
There's a CD4 in the PowerPacks, and you can also get it by download if you're a Club member (you might need to be Silver, or something). I'm not sure if it's actually the *same* CD4 in both cases. It contains some extra apps and some commercial stuff. All the non-commercial stuff will be on the FTP mirrors we just set up anyway, and you can always pull commercial stuff from the Club, so no, you don't need it.
