Guest robmcw
Okay... So I've been trying to figure this out for a while but haven't gotten anywhere. I have a Dell 700m. As of now my resolution is set to 1024x768... and is distorted obviously... When i set the resolution and monitor to 1280x800 and test using XFdrake the text box asking if the settings are correct is about 4/5's below the bottom of the screen... and stretched greatly vertically... has anyone had this problem and gotten past it? thanks rob

daniewicz
iphitus means to adjust the controls on your monitor to adust width, height, etc. So, try again to set to 1280x800, and then use these controls (buttons) to bring things to where they should be. If you are still having trouble, post your XF86Config-4 for us to look at.
devries
What grahics is in that laptop? If it is intel try 855resolution http://perso.wanadoo.fr/apoirier/ rpm: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idp...v.i586.rpm.html
iphitus
http://www.celifornia.com/documents/dell700m.html install devries package and take a look at the video section of that page.
Gowator
its possible to get anything working.... seriously my projector does some really weird ratio's.... but it takes some work and a more sophisticated tool. I don't know about that particualr graphics card at all but I find xf86cfg (available on the CD's) to be excellent. IOt lets you define loads of non standard resolutions (if your doesn't exist) and play with timing to get it in the right place. It takes abit of playing about compared to everything automatic but you end up with a really tuned xf86config.
adamw
$ gtf 1280 800 60 Modeline "1280x800_60.00" 83.46 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 828 -HSync +Vsync so add this to xorg.conf, under the other modelines: Modeline "1280x800" 83.46 1280 1344 1480 1680 800 801 804 828 -HSync +Vsync Now set all the 'virtuals' in the screen section at the bottom to 1280x800. might work. Guest robmcw
Okay... So I'm very new to Linux... what does restart X mean? and how would i do that? I've changed my XF86Config file to the appropritate stuff based on what the readme and that other site told me. The differences in my my display now are when I test the 1280x800 resolution i have an unclear screen wtih multiple windows of the "is this the correct setting" across the screen. Whereas before i only had one but only the top of it was visible as the rest goes off the screen. also i don't think that i change my monitor settings manually. no buttons or anything. thanks for the help hopefully i can get this! daniewicz
Okay... So I'm very new to Linux... what does restart X mean? and how would i do that? From the GUI: "Logout" and then "End Session Only" Or you could just reboot! Linux folk take a unusually strong aversion to this, too Windows I guess

adamw
btw, MDK 10.2 will have much better support for non-4:3 resolutions. At least, hopefully it will. Pixel is cheerfully coding it as we speak, but there's not a whole lot of non-4:3 monitors available for MDK to test it on. I have my 1024x480 laptop at my disposal but I can't actually install on that right now for unrelated reasons. So if people with non-4:3 resolutions could test installing Cooker right now or RC1 / RC2 when they're released, that'd be massively helpful.
