writeback cache on a usb drive

My USB drive automatically gets recognized by MDK when I plug it in.

If I copy something to it, then unplug it without umounting, the files I put on there are usually 0 bytes (depending on how many files I write).

If I umount it first, everything is fine.

Is there a way to turn off writeback caching on the usb drive so that I can simply yank the thing out and still have all my files intact?

thanks

Greg
