10.0 install issue

Hello people

am new here and was wondering if anyone could help me solve my problem

Currently have Mandrake 10.0

Tried to install this distro and ran into a problem

I do get the splashscreen with the option to install

but as soon as i press enter

my computer just keeps rebooting

My computer specs are the following:

Hewlett Packard Pavillion a 414x

1024 RAM

200 GB Maxtor (Partitioned into 130 GB,50 GB and 10GB to which the 50 GB is the linux partition)

and a 80 GB Seagate

128 MB Visiontek(ATI) 9200 SEC graphics card

Now i have tried to install this through Partitionmagic 8 which i should've never done as it corrupted my 80 GB hdd but luckily i rescued it backed up some stuff and formatted the 130 GB partition

Now from what i have been reading anything above 137 GB could cause problems but mine is under that so should be fine

But still i get the same problem

Also tried to set my hdd settings to LBA in bios instead of auto

didn't work neither

Am desperate to get Mandrake going as windows is starting to piss me off

It will still be around on dualboot for games and such so the kids can play

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks in advance,

Mickey

hi and welcome aboard. :)

maybe we can fix the problem. first of all: i hope you started the install, booting from the cd and not starting it from windows (yes, some people tried that :D). if your start the cd, at the first screen, do not select isntall but advanced options (hit F1). when you get to the command line, type

linux noapic nolapic

and try to continue with the install then. when you get to the partitioning section, create a /swap partition (optimum: double ram size), a root partition / with roughly 5 gb and one /home partition for your personal files. as fileformat, i suggest using ext3 or reiserfs.

if you need further help, just post your questions :)

good luck.

check your bios for dma settings. if possible, try once booting with disabled dma in your bios.

another possible thing: disable usb-legacy support in your bios. this worked for some persons.

do you have a live-cd in order to see if they start well? if yes, try them. if you get error messages along the way, please post them.

Couldn't really find anything specific about dma in the bios

I did on the other hand tried to disable the usb-legacy

made no difference though :(

no error reports at all

just a big black screen

Am i stressing you allready? hehe

hmm.... if none of these work, i will have to do some research on the net... will post further information if i find some. in the meantime, try running a live-cd (e.g. Mandrake-Move, Knoppix, Kanotix, Suse-live) on your box if you haven't done so already.

i also hope one of the real gurus shows up with some additional ideas. :D

if knoppix stays black, then you seem to have a problem with your ati graphics-card. so you would need to install the ati-driver into your system somehow... but how, if it doesn't even boot?

*scratching my head*

Just tried it with my onboard video card and knoppix wouldn't boot at all (Bad CD)

Last time it did work though and did same as Mandrake really..

it brought me to the splashscreen and that was it :(

i searched around the net for hours and found others who ran into the same problem but i really didn't find any solution for your problem than trying other distros like suse (i heard/read that their distro works a bit better with the ati-drivers) until you find one that works. sorry, man.

Someone told me it could also be my hardddrive

It not being supported by MDK 10.0

They also mentioned that that problem should be resolved in MDK 10.1

Since i am lacking any blanc discs/dvds atm i can't get the latest

Will update you as i go along though :)

Thanks for all the help given arctic it was greatly appreciated :)

you didn't waste our time even if we could not get your box running... maybe in some months, your hardware will be fully supported by the new kernels. anyway, i wish you luck and recommend to test a live-cd every few months (e.g. once kernel 2.6.12 is out) or so before downloading a complete 3-cd distro like mandrake. :)
