slow transfer through ethernet

:screwy:

I have a LAN with 3 computer (Mandrake, WNT, WXP) connected through a DSL router to the internet.

My Mandrake 10.1 (just installed on a 5 years old PII Laptop) is very bery slow in FTP transfer and internet browsing (goes in time out).

I think the problem is due to trasfering small files. In fact testing LAN FTP connection I see a good speed (about 1800KByte/s) transfering a single large 100MB file while transfering 10 small 20KB files the elapsed time increase. I suspect it has some sort of overhead in getting the information before the transfer wile the transfer itself is OK. Also after connecting with FTP a simple list command take a wile to be processed.

I suppose the slow internet browsing is due to the same reason, because of many smal files to be downloaded to render the page.

I am quite new to Linux and I finished my resources; can anybody help in determining what is the problem ?

Thanks
