leezer3
I'm looking to install 10.1 official on a Toshiba Tecra S1. Several questions: 1. Will the installer be able to take 5gb off each of the two partitions on it? (I only have restore CDs, which refuse to give me anything but 2 20gb NTFS partitions) 2. Will both the wireless & the ethernet work properly, or will they need further config? 3. Any other features on this laptop that I should be aware of when installing? Thanks
DragonMage
1. As long as you are using the custom partition scheme, I don't see why not. Just in case, defrag your hard drive fully and back up everything before you install Mandrake. 2. Ethernet should work properly with just a little bit of configuring (the typical stuff like static ip or dynamic ip, etc). Wireless I am not sure about since wireless is a bit problematic in Linux right now. The only way to test it is to try it yourself. 3. Like I said, try installing it and see if there are gotchas and glitches that you need working around. Laptops in my experience is a bit finicky to get it working 100%. leezer3
Thanks for that :) At the minute, the ethernet is working with no interference on my part, but no joy with the wireless. Otherwise, I currently seem to be without working battery gauges, and a SD card reader. (All the stuff I can find on the net says that this will not work, anyone who can tell me how to get it to work will be much appreciated)
DragonMage
For battery gauges, first you need to make sure that acpi is on. 1. Check whether there is a line in your /etc/lilo.conf that starts with the words append=" and make sure there is a line saying acpi=on in there. If not, add it, then run lilo -v to make it stick, then reboot 2. Make sure that acpi and acpid services are loaded. Use drakxservices to check. If they are not even available, urpmi acpi and acpid 3. Make sure that toshiba_acpi module is loaded. Put the line toshiba_acpi in your /etc/modprobe.preload to make it loaded at boot time. 4. If you are using KDE, install kdeutils-klaptop by urpming it so that you can see the battery gauge in your KDE. That's how I got battery gauge to come up in my toshiba laptop. So it should work for you.
leezer3
Installed as per your instructions, now laptop battery config gives me this message: Your computer seems to have a partial ACPI installation. ACPI was probably enabled, but some of the sub-options were not - you need to enable at least 'AC Adaptor' and 'Control Method Battery' and then rebuild your kernel. DragonMage
Can you post your /etc/lilo.conf, /etc/modprobe.preload and /etc/modprobe.conf? Also check what is the output of this command? rpm -qa |grep acpi Finally check the content of your /proc/acpi directory and see if there is something directory named battery in there? DragonMage
Try adding these into the append=" section in your /etc/lilo.conf noapic nolapic Acpi and acpid is running in the services right?
leezer3
Try adding these into the append=" section in your /etc/lilo.conf noapic nolapic Acpi and acpid is running in the services right? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Even worse, I'm afraid- Right after pressing enter to boot Linux in Lilo, I get a black screen, & the laptop has to be turned off. (I've waited over 5 mins, should I be waiting longer?) Yes, both Acpi and acpid are running in the services.
DragonMage
Ouchie.. sorry about that. I usually have those options on every computer I install Mandrake in. Because if it is not, then it will hang. Anyway, I cannot help you any more in this regards. Sorry about that. Usually toshibas are pretty easy to get working but I guess Tecras are too different from Satellites.
leezer3
AHA!!! Found this site: http://www.a-za-z0-9.de/linux/s1acpifix.html What I need though is step by step instructions on how to reconfigure & recompile the kernel. Thanks in advance! DragonMage
Hmm.. from that site, it seems that there is a DSDT problem with toshiba tecra. The site only covers kernel 2.6.0 and 2.6.1 while Mandrake uses 2.6.8. I'm surprised that DSDT problem is not solved in newer kernel already. Anyway, I don't know much about DSDT, so try searching this board for that.
