Guest uvcceet
Hi folks, I set Mandrake 10 up on a friend's PC. Went pretty well considering I am not what you would call proficient in Linux. He uses an ActionTec modem on com1 (dos-speak) and Mandrake found it during the installation. I configured kPPP to dial his ISP, and it was able to send and receive modem commands verifying that the modem was available, and Mandrake knows where to find it. The only init command was ATZ for the default configuration, it dialed his ISP and it went through the noise/negotiating portion of the ritual, and just when it seems it should have made the final connection, it quit and dropped off line with the message that device ppp0 could not be found. It dials, it tries to connect, and it quits. I don't understand the error message and am wondering if anyone can interpret it for me. I checked the Actiontec web site and it didn't seem to offer anymore than I already knew to get it configured. Works fine in windows, and I tried dialing my ISP to see if it was related to the other end of the line, but the results were the same. What more can I test, and what kind of information should I be providing to get some help figuring this one out? Thanks for the space and the consideration. Regards, John
bvc
open a terminal, run kppp and try to connect again to see if it gives more info in the terminal. Where does it find the modem? /dev/modem? /dev/ttyS0? If, /dev/modem, in a terminal do file /dev/modem what does it say?
