Shouldn't be in tips-n-tricks, IMO.

 

What you ask depends on what graphical environment you use.

With Gnome or KDE, look in the preferences for MIME settings. With ROX, look into /usr/local/share/Choices.

if you're using KDE, go to Kontrol Center (IE: configure your desktop)->components->file associations. type mpg in the search box. go to the mpg file extension & check which program associated with it is at the top of the list provided. if mplayer is in the list, but not at the top, move it there. if mplayer isn't in the list, use the "add" button & browse to the mplayer executable to add it. the path to that should be /usr/bin/gmplayer. add it, "apply", then try a .mpg file.
