Guest iboadi
Hey, I have installed Mandrake a few days ago and I wanted to use a US Robotics external modem on the serial port. I know it works on linux because it worked on Debian. I verified for /dev/modem but there is nothing there. I first tried to detect it with modem autodetect from Hardrake, but I had no result. I have looked on the internet on how to make it work, but still nothing. I have regarded the subject on the archive of this forum, but still nothing I can use. As I need to have it connected to the system and I am out of ideas, I thought someone can help me. If you know how to do this, please tell me, cause I am about to throw everything out of the window... (Result of two weeks of fighting with my ignorance in system install && sometimes, the system's manner of functionning). Thanks, Adi
bvc
you do not need /dev/modem which port? ttyS0? then configure using /dev/ttyS0 and see if if works. I have an USR Ext 5686 that linux has never, visably, detected....but it worked. Well, kppp found it. I haven't used it since around ML-9.1 though. Guest Aris
Dear iboadi, Few days ago, I found a 3COM US Robotics 56k FaxModem (External) and everything worked perfectly in Mandrake 9.1  The port was /dev/modem, I can't understand why your distro cannot detect this modem, because it is absolutely sure that it is a linmodem.. Greetings, -- Aris. Edited November 16, 2004 by Aris
jagibbs
I was able to detect my modem using the MCC->hardware function (make sure to check "autodetect modems" also) or it won't even look for modems. It detected mine, but after the first reboot, it defaulted to /dev/modem when attempting ot dial. I had to manually change the configuration to /dev/ttyS0 for it to work (as already suggested)...of course this was after it was detected for me.
