onegear
Hello all, I haven't tried Mandrake in a couple of years so I decided to download 10.1 Community and give it a shot. The installation went fine on my IBM T30 but after booting into the system for the first time, I noticed that all of my folders are locked. How does Mandrake configure permissions after a fresh install? It seems that I can only transfer files as root. I tried to transfer some files/data from my ftp server to the laptop but was unable to do so with my regular account. Thanks for the help. Ixthusdan
The areas accessible by normal users is in their /home directories. In linux, permissions are not a free for all. So give your user permission to utilize the folders. But I would caution you against universal permissions, since you would lose some of your security. Maybe create a group and add your user to it. I just thought it was strange that all of my folders in my /home directory, by default, were locked for my normal user account. This doesn't happen when I install FreeBSD or Slackware. Thanks for the info.
Padma
Interesting. It doesn't (normally) happen in Mandrake, either. ;) Did you install and re-use an existing /home partition? If the user/group ID numbers don't coincide, that could explain it. Edited November 15, 2004 by Padma
Ixthusdan
I did not understand the original post. I have not had this happen before, but you can give your user ownership of all the files. I always keep the /home partition, and my user. onegear
Thanks for the help, all. I'm going to look into it a little more. I must have done something during install....just not sure what. I really haven't configured anything on that box, yet, so I could always do a reinstall. Thanks! onegear
Well, not sure what the deal was but I did a reinstall and the same issue was not there. All permissions were configured properly. Thanks for all of your help.
