kmc77
I have noticed that I've gotten this error a few times while trying to install all of my apps into Ubuntu. root@kevins:/home/kevin # /home/kevin/downloaded/et-linux-2.56-2.x86.run bash: /home/kevin/downloaded/et-linux-2.56-2.x86.run: Permission denied This example is from an attempted Enemy Territory install, but it happens with other apps also. Gproftpd for example. Not sure what the problem is, as i am using root terminal. Can any of you Ubuntu users out there give me a hand? kmc77
Ok this may sound a little silly (remember I'm only 11 months new to Linux and MDK has been my only experience), but are deb packages the only thing I can install in Ubuntu or can I still use Tar and RPMs? bvc
not silly You can still use tarballs. apt-get can also download a source pkg and build it for you ;) Something urpmi needs to add, IMO. RPMS? Can't hurt to try. I never have. There's also an app called alien that converts between several distro pkg systems. It's like installing an rpm, it may or may not work. Alien has given me about a 50/50 success rate.
bvc
I saw this http://gnomesupport.org/forums/viewtopic.p...8144&highlight= and thought it was a good example for you to see how to use apt for compiling source pkgs.

jlc
as far as the game, sudo sh /home/kevin/downloaded/et-linux-2.56-2.x86.run Alien works pretty good, if not you can build it your self, checkinstall will also build .deb's Edited November 5, 2004 by cybrjackle
