complex perl cgi stalling on M10.0 server

I've posted previously, but with little sucess. Please see Previous discussion thread for history.

Since then, I've done a little bit of experimenting and found the errors are occurring at:

open(NAV,"<navigation_start.txt");

while (<NAV>) {

print "$_"; }

close (NAV);

it is the $_ where the stall occurrs (sometimes). That's the weirdest thing, sometimmes it stalls here, sometimes at the next similar load, and sometimes at the one after that.

Please help if you can. It all worked fine on the old M7 server!
