solving some problems with apt-get

Recommended Posts

routers can be frustrating. and this even more if they are used e.g. with debian based distros (like knoppix, kanotix, gnoppix or ubuntu). somehow, debian unstable seems to be unable to work properly with a significant amount of routers and adsl-modem integrated routers. while you might get your newtork runing (browser fully functionable), you might experience some problems once you want to update your system with apt-get or synaptic. most of the time however, there is a workaround (might also work with other distros than debian-based ones, although not tested yet):

1.) set up your apt-get repositories in a normal way (e.g. in synaptic) and save the settings.

2.) open two terminals as root.

3.) ping the mirror you want to use in the one terminal (e.g. 'ping ftp.debian.org')

4.) once the connection is established, go to the second terminal window and run 'apt-get update'. do this as many times as you want (=as many times as needed, depending on the number of mirrors you are using)

4.) once all is finished, you can run 'apt-get upgrade' or install single packages.

i know, not the best solution, but still better than tweaking your firewall and perhaps messing all up.

have fun :)
