Automatic mounting of USB removable drive

Hi,

I installed mdk 10.0 ten days ago on my laptop and It worked nicely with my Iomega diskonkey (removable Mini USB 128 MB drive). I could plug it and it is mounted automtically (/mnt/removable). Now I can't get it working unless I start HardDrake and run Config tool. After that a shortcut on my desktop appears. But it works when I remove it, mdk remove the shortcut and unmount the device automatically!

When I create a file /mnt/key and mount it with the command :

mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/key

I get the following error message

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,

or too many mounted file systems

but now I can see the shortcut created on my desktop and my device working!!!

Here is a copy of my /mnt/fstab file

-------------------------------------------------

/dev/hda5 / ext3 noatime 1 1

none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0

/dev/hda7 /home ext3 noatime 1 2

/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs umask=0,nls=iso8859-1,ro 0 0

none /proc proc defaults 0 0

/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0

none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/scsi/host2/bus0/target0/lun0/part1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=iso8859-1,kudzu,codepage=850 0

---------------------------------------

Any suggestion

Thanks

Yassine

When you plug in the drive, or just before, do as root in a konsole:

tail -f /var/log/messages

and tell me what it says the moment (and just after) when you plug in the drive.

Also, start mcc or whatever and see what happens; it may take a minute or even a few...

Just give the messages of that all.

BTW I must say that this was improved in 10.1..

Hi aRTee

When you plug in the drive, or just before, do as root in a konsole:

tail -f /var/log/messages

here is the message befor I plug the USB drive

[root@localhost yassine]# tail -f /var/log/messages

But now the console is hunging!! but when I start another console it reports that I stat something when I log in as root.

I hope this will help.

Thank you for helping

just do

tail -f /var/log/messages

once, and observe, it will add messages when you plug the usb device.

Don't stop it!

Start mcc/harddrake2 from another console/xterm.

Wait a couple of minutes and check if something changes;

This looks a lot like the behaviour of my digital camera,....

I once opened a topic for that one too.

It just has a bad usb removable storage implementation...

After inserting the USB I started HardDarke.

I am sorry I am very new to linux so I don't know how to start mcc/harddrake2 from the konsole (is it a command line?)

Sorry again

Never mind the stuff about /dev/hd-x, just see that at some point I started harddrake2 by starting the Mandrake control centre (mcc - start it as mcc from the command line or from the menu: system - configuration - configure your computer). then just go to hardware, and select the hardware icon. That starts harddrake2. Or you can start it from the command line, harddrake2.

So it takes quite some time for /dev/sda1 to get created. Next step is to mount that one - sda1.

Ah! Upon rereading your problem description, I get it. You first tried to mount /dev/sda, but this is not correct; it should be /dev/sda1!! But that only gets created a bit later... have a look with:

ls /dev/sda*

if /dev/sda1 gets created - then try again to mount that one..

Hi

I am sorry I had troubles with my internet connection. I tried again with

tail -f /var/log/messages

plugging the USB drive, starting mcc and harddrake2 then running config tool

here is the message

here is what I found from Harddrake drives

Bus: ?SCSI

Location on the bus: ?0:0:0

Channel: ?0

Description: ?I0MEGA|Minidrive 128

New devfs device: ?/dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/disc

Old device file: ?/dev/sda

Module: ?unknown

Floppy format: ?I0MEGA Mini 128*IOM

Media class: ?hd (Mass Storage|SCSI|Bulk (Zip))

It seems to me that there is no sda1 before I run config tool. Once this tool runs I can find sda1. I really don't understand the problem, why it isn't automatically mounted !!

Ok, now I tried your solution and created the file /mnt/cle and mounted sda1 in cle. That worked but mdk mounted also /mnt/removable but the USB files are in cle and not removable. However, I don't have acces to these files from KDE. I need to log in as root in Konsole!!

I don't know haw to force mdk to mount the USB in removable ?

You need to log in as root because you mounted as root.

Ok, don't know how to get Mandrake to behave, but what you can do, as root, is this:

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/cle -o uid=501

now, that last bit indicates that the owner should be the user with id (uid) 501 which is usually the id number of the first user that gets created.

You can check with:

less /etc/passwd

which uid your regular user account has (2nd and 3rd field after the name), and if it's not 501, put whatever number it is in that mount command.

That should let you read and write in KDE.

Thanks it works that way.

I want just to point out that when typing a wrong command like

mount -t vfat /dev/sda /mnt/cle

that seems to force mdk to create a file /mnt/removable, mount the USB drive in that one and create a shortcut on the desktop that I have access to it!! Amazing!

Anyways, both ways work so ''que demande le peuple de plus!''

Thanks again aRTee for helping

Funny behaviour, that with the wrong command and then getting access via /mnt/removable...

Nice that you can now work around the 'hard' issue, what more I'd like to see: well, actually that you nor anyone else would have to go through such issues. This kind of thing should just work. But ah well... at least you are happy now.. :D
