Using Linux to perform network backups of PCs

I am a fairly new Linux user. I currently have a Mandrake 9.1 distro on a box with an AMD 1800 CPU, 512 RAM, 30 GB drive, etc... This Linux box is on a home network with 3 other WinXP boxes and a Mac Laptop using a Linksys router and Cat 5 cabling.

In the 21 Sep 04 issue of PC Magazine was an article about external storage. One category of external storage was network-attached that, along with software, provided the ability to backup multiple PCs using the Cat 5 cable.

I got to thinking I could hand an old spare 200 MHZ pentium II box onto my network to serve the same function as these commerically built units.

Is there GNU software that would facilitate this functionality? Any tips on how to set up this 200 mhz box to perform this function?

Thanks

Tom
