Guest GorGor Posted December 21, 2002 Report Share Posted December 21, 2002 Hullo There may be better stuff at google's groups but I would like to know for a Mandrake distro, if anyone thinks it worthwile to install an Intruder detection system. I don't want a poll as I am a newbie. Me thinks polls are self fulfilling, (people will go for windoze if they follow majority polls) Sorry but its true. I am running a dial up modem, firewall guarddog. Any thoughts on whether I need LIDS, prelude, Snort or whatever would be appreciated. Counterspy Posted December 21, 2002 Report Share Posted December 21, 2002 Unless you have an abiding interest in knowing who's banging on your doors or have a network to protect, there is little justification for an IDS. The Guarddog firewall is more than sufficient protection for the average home user. This subject has been debated endlessly in the alt.os.linux.mandrake newsgroup with a growing consensus that a single machine does not even need a firewall, NID, or antivirus program.
