partition weirdness

I have developed a strange problem. I set up a new partition on hdb (hdb10) and copied files via cp -ax from an old partition (hda6). In /ect/fstab I changed the hda6 to hdb10. I did the same with two other partitions (I am clearing space on hda by moving data to hdb). Things worked fine for the second partitions, but not for hda6 and hdb10 in Mandrake. All worked fine for my Debian installation (Debian and Mandrake systems are both on hdb). When I checked /dev/mtab I find that had6 is being used. I then checked /dev and saw that /dev/hdb10 is linked to hda6. How do I unlink this?

Thanks in advance.
